I don't know if someone has already started this topic but I'll try it anyways.. Speaking on my behalf, I believe the beach boys to be very underrated in a lot of ways.. Awards, Chart Statistics, Praise, Recognition, Accolades, Lack of Merchandise, you name it. Endless and endless, numerous and numerous greatest hits compilations that we don't need. Anybody out there who agrees or disagrees?

I agree. Our local Clear Chanel station does a 3 hour Beatle special every Sunday morning. You think they would do maybe two BB songs in a row?

That's because the beatles are the greatest thing to ever happen to the world (thats sarcasm). I don't even wanna go there and discuss the beatles.. but sirius radio just did the beach boys marathon. thats great, but only 1 weekend.

Yes, I think sometimes The Beach Boys are underrated, especially by music critics and by magazines and TV shows that do polls and The Beach Boys are second to The Beatles. However, The Beach Boys have many fans and are the best selling band in America. There are probably people who have always considered The Beach Boys a nostalgia band and never kept up with the fact that they have continued to release albums after the 1960’s. However, I have never met anyone who said they didn’t like the Beach Boys. I’ve never heard of anyone complaining about them being called “America’s Band”.

Under-rated? Not in the UK or Europe I don't think. You can always find a nice selection of music and video in the record stores, they get played on quite heavy roatation on oldies stations, and even most main-stream pop sations. The new album has been played on numerous stations in the UK and Europe, and the album went straight into number 15 in the official UK charts. The new single also gets played a lot on various stations.

The Beach Boys are constantly mentioned in the same breath as The Beatles when it comes to the best albums and singles of all time, and the new album has had wide-spread praise. As for Greatest Hits albums, yes, The Beach Boys have quite a few, as does Elvis Presley, and he's THE Biggest artist the World has ever known. I don't think you can call a band under-rated because of its greatest hits catalogue.

That statement is probably more accurate than you think (even with the sarcasm). It's thanks to The Beatles that pop-music evolved the way it did. It's thanks to The Beatles that Brian had the drive to compete and drive The Beach Boys to record better and better material. It's thanks to The Beatles that the awesome "Smile" was started and finally released. The Beatles were something special to many people, just as The Beach Boys are something special to many other people.

It may have something to do with the fact there name is the beach boys, that automatically categorizes them.. it shouldnt but it does. i think capitol records has a lot to do with them getting the short end of the stick. if i worked for capitol back in the early days of the beach boys i prolly wouldnt be second guessing brian wilson.. whos to argue with genius.

Oh yea, the beach boys are definetly respected more in the U.K. Maybe I should live there! But when one keeps throwing out greatest hits cd, with the same songs on it... it gets a little old. According to wikipedia, the beatles, elvis, madonna, michael jackson, elton john, led zeppelin, abba and queen have sold more than 300 million records. In your heart and mind should the beach boys be on that list..?

The Beach Boys have only sold over 100 million records as far as I can see according to various estimates on the Internet, so they shouldn't be on that list. It doesn't mean they are under-rated though, it just means they have a different type of audience.

50 years of music and only 100 million records sold.. theres something wrong with that picture. lol
Even if you look at the list of best-selling artists, the beach boys aren't even on it..

They are not the best selling band in America, but they are the best selling American band. However, several American solo artists have out sold them.

I have. My 16 year old niece does not like them. She's a classicaly trained pianist and has been taking jazz the past few years. Besides whatever 16 year olds like, she loves The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Santana, Queen and Bob Marley & The Wailers. They are all ancient bands I've turned her into, but I've failed with The Beach Boys. She can't stand them!

My record still stands since I haven't met your niece. But, darn it, she's missing out. Those other groups you named are fine but she's missing out on some listening pleasure by not enjoying The Beach Boys. They're not the best selling band in America???? I thought they were. Well they should be. I certainly keep them in business. lol.

I don't even know what "best selling" means anymore.. Chart Statistics or what? Albums, singles..?
